Edward Baker of Lancaster County 1722

Just recently found out that Edward Baker is my 6th great grandfather...I had assumed it was Andrew Baker(that was married to Mary Boiling)  that's why it is so important to do your own research, when I first started genealogy I blindly just added what other people had to my tree, DNA testing has put my baker line right with Edward. I do believe that Edward Baker somehow connects with Robert Baker, the gun maker, from Lancaster County, and then later Amelia County,Va. I am hoping by writing all this out, I either connect the dots or maybe someone will read this and they connect the dots..or at least find a new cousin.

Edward Baker was born around 1722 in Lancaster co, PA his father was also named Edward and his mother could of possibly been Dorthy but at this time I have no other information. These records have been pieced together through a family bible (not mine) and quaker records.

About Edward Sr.
Came to America about 1715 settling first in Chester County PA then to Lancaster County.
Records state he is the son of William of Hampshire. A year after their arrival Edwards nephew (by deceased brother Richard) went to Philadelphia. Edward and family moved to Pridesville area of Amelia County in 1736

William was born 1687 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England

His children

1. William
2. Edward( died young)
3 and 4 twin daughters born in England
5. Joseph (sickly never married lived with edward2)
6 and 7 more twin daughters
8. Edward

Can be traced back several more generations, but for now I will leave it as is

Back to the topic Edward of 1722

(Let me just start by saying Edward and his family probably worried the Quakers immensely , several got disowned, they had slaves, married cousins..etc...a bunch of heathens..some traits sure do pass down generation after generation haha)

Edward and his brother Joseph moved from Amelia County, VA to the northwestern part of Pittsylvania county(became henry county in 1776 and then Franklin County in 1785)
Soon after came cousins Edward, Robert, William, and Richard Baker to other parts of Pittsylvania County.
These cousins were not Quakers
These appear to be Richards children(his fathers brother) that went to Philadelphia first. (Another note of interest is Robert the gun makers wife was from Philadelphia.

Edward married Elizabeth Lovell in 1742
Elizabeth was daughter of William Lovell
William was born 1699 in Modbury, Devonshire, England came to Virginia around 1720 with a group of Quakers settling in Isle of Wight county, he died in 1737
William also had a son William, which gave Edward and his sister two slaves as a wedding gift, causing a rift because of their religion, yet they kept them.

Edward was a planter and a harness maker.

Edward and Elizabeth had the following children

1. Elizabeth b. 1744
2. Sarah b. 1747
3. Edward b. 1749
4. Richard b. 1750
5. William b. 1755
6. Robert b. 1756
7. James b. 1761
8. Mary b. 1762
9. John b. 1765

Children William and John drowned on a ferry in 1771. I should add here in addition to Edward working with leather and crops he also operated a ferry in Upper Blackwater present day Franklin co VA(which is where him and Elizabeth settled after marriage)

I need to spend some time digging into all his children's lives, but here is what I have.

Elizabeth married James Arthbuckle and settled in Russell and Lee County VA

Sarah married her first cousin Caleb Baker and was disowned from the Quakers. When Caleb died she married his widow brother Samuel and moved to Yadkin County, NC. She had children by both brothers( so her children were sibilings and first cousins, and second cousins)
What I have been able to find so far is there were brothers Samuel and Caleb born to an Abraham Baker, Abraham was the son of Caleb Baker(gun maker) and grandson of Robert Baker(gun maker)
A first cousin shares grandparents, so that doesn't work out, maybe they weren't first cousins, maybe second or third even..I don't know how much other people have added on while transcribing records. As of yet i haven't found out anything else about these brothers. More about the gun makers below.

Edward married Maleatha Crowell moved to Russell County VA and then back to Franklin County VA

Richard married Mary Mullins and moved to Henry county, VA (this is my line)
Richard was disciplined and married contrary to discipline (mcd) I would like to know why the Quakers didn't want this marriage to take place

Robert moved to Washington county TN

James married Jessy Harmon and moved to Lee County VA later to Claiborne county TN

Mary married Francis Peterson of Lee County, they moved to South Carolina.

In 1786/87 Edward and Elizabeth, several grown children and their family, and some cousins moved to western Russell Co VA where they attempt to establish a station on Powell River. Edward dies there. Indians force them to flee in 1788 back to Franklin County.

Some info on the gun maker Bakers...their travel patterns are similar..
Please note there was some conflicting information, I have tried to bare bone it to what I think is essential.

Robert Baker settled in Conestaga Township, Chester Co PA-became Lancaster Co in 1729
On august 15 1719 went to Lancaster court and asked permission to erect a gun boring plant, him and his son caleb set up gun shop, Robert dies in 1728, his son Caleb continues to operate it until the family moved to Amelia County, VA

Something else I found very interesting is while someone was researching who the first gun maker was of Lancaster county another name came up. Martin Mylin/Meylin is it that far of a strech that some could of branched out to the name Mullin/s..something else worth researching! He was found on a 1716 Lancaster tax list. Could this possibly be the family that my Mary Mullins comes from! Mylins were Mennonites which could could explain why my Richard was disciplined not to mary her...hmmmmm

Another theory I have on Richards wife Mary Mullins is she is sister of Susannah Mullins. Susannah Mullins married Edward Baker4 he was son of edward grandson of the 1722 edward. Supposedly Mary was born in 1770 although I don't know where I got those facts at. Susannah was the daughter of William Mullins and Nancy Jane Stanley..It would make sense as they usually intermarried.

In case anyone in interested here is my lineage to edward

Me
My mom
James Baker-my grandma(still living)
Buck Baker-Rebecca Stephens
William Baker-Ella Hubbard
Cornelius Baker-Socia Hammonds
Richard Baker-Abigal Beverly
Richard Baker-Mary Mullins
Edward Baker-Elizabeth Lovell

Although I am not done with this, I will publish and add to it as I find information, after all genealogy is never done.

Thanks for posting this! The connection between Richard Baker of Washington Co, TN 1797 and Andrew Baker of Grayson Co. Va. was blurry. Next time I'm working on my family tree, Edward will be added.

Thanks for the info, Edward b, 1749 and Maleatha Crowell are in my line. Thanks for the info. Interesting that i live in the next county over from the VA counties listed. I have hit sort of a block, as normal, do you have any additional data on Maleatha??? Thanks for all your help and the large amount of effort. If I can help let me know, cousin...
