Ezra Perry and Elizabeth Burgess

My tree is oozing with pilgrims and early settlers and I couldn't be happier. I am very proud to have such deep roots in America history, with thanksgiving right around the corner decided it's a great time to profile some of them, and learn as I go along.

Ezra Perry was born in 1627 in Bridford, Devonshire, England, too much conflicting information on his parents so I won't include it here.

Elizabeth Burgess was born around 1629 daughter of Thomas and Dorothy Waynes Burgess.

Ezra and Elizabeth were married Feb 12 1651/52 (conflicting sources) in Sandwich, Barnstable, Massachusetts. They had seven children born in Sandwich.
1. Ezra m. Rebecca Freeman
2. Deborah m. Seth Pope
3. John m. Elizabeth Williamson (my line)
4. Sarah m. Ephraim Swift
5. Samuel m. Esther Tabor
6. Benjamin m. Dinah Swift
7. Remembrance m. Jonathan Tobey

Some mentions of Ezra in various town records:

1644-pledged 9 shillings to repair of Sandwich meeting house

1654-April 5- Thomas and Dorothy Burgess sold Ezra half a tract of land at Mannomett

1655-May 20 pledged 5 shillings for building of a meeting house in Sandwich.

1657-listed as lieutenant in the militia

1663-July 10 1663 his father in law (Thomas Burgess) deeded land at Manamet to him. Thomas had purchased the land from Myles Standish, Myles had purchased the land from Josias(a Nauset Sachem) the area was called Herring River Village in North Sandwich, it adjoined land where Ezra had his home.

1671-on committe to view damage done by Indians to horses/hogs belonging to the English.

1671-appointed to go with James Skiffee to look at upland and meadow that James wanted to exchange with the town.

1674 and 1677- served on grand inquest juries

1679- appointed constable

1684-April. Thomas Burgess bequeathed two lots of land to Ezra. Ezra was a co-executor along with his brother in law Joseph Burgess.

Ezra died oct 16 1689 at the age of 64 in Sandwich. His stone is one of the oldest surviving stones at the Old Towne Cemetery in Sandwich.

My confederate solider - Greenville Sanders

Yes, I am proud of my confederate heritage, I am also proud of my union soldiers. Our ancestors made so many sacrifices, each one plays a part of how our life is today. So I won't hold my head in shame or hide my confederate roots, because the history books try to teach that the confederacy is bad-but that's not my intention of arguing the reasons of the civil war.
*****************************************************************************************************************************

Greenville Sanders born in 1823 Pike, Ky to Thomas Jefferson Sanders and Elizabeth McBrayer

On January 15 1845 he married Rhoda Potter daughter of Benjamin Potter and Susannah Hollingsworth

1850 census living in Pike, ky
1860 census living in Scott, Va

On Dec 11 1863 he was captured along with his son Levi Sanders in Piketon, Ky
Discharged to Rock Island prison Dec 24 1863
Levi did not survive Rock Island(it wasn't called Andersonville of the North for no reason)
Levi died of small pox Feb 18, 1864

Greenville wrote a letter to his wife, sent it to Levi's wife, it was supposed to be forward to his wife but it remained in her family.

Dear wife,
I have an opportunity of writing to you to let you know that I am well and hope when these few lines reaces you they may find in thee same good health. Levi died heare the 18 of febuary with the small pox. I want you to do the best you can till I come home. I would like to see you all and be near to you all once more. You must take good care of your self till I come home I am at Rock Island Prison. I'll give my love to Father and Mother Harmon you will please send this to my father and he can send it to my wife. I hope the day is not far distant when I will leave this place for exchange. This is all at present write as soon as you get this and let me know how you get along. Direct your letter to Barracks No. 46, from your husband , Greenville Sanders.

So I have to wonder if he could read and write, maybe someone else wrote letter home, or maybe he put an X on his alligence out of protest, he just wanted out of there!

The next part I don't understand, 1870 census he is living in home of someone, he eventually gets remarried, and his wife gets remarried..maybe she was having an affair with ezekial prater , because he divorces his wife and they get married, later ezekial remarries his first wife.

Greenville dies 1898 buried on Rockhouse Creek Rd. Near marrowbone creek, which is where he was found in the 1880 census.

The 36th Battalion, Virginia Cavalry was organized in February 1863, with four companies, later increased to five. The unit was assigned to A. G. Jenkins', W. E. Jones', B. T. Johnson's, and Payne's Brigade. It had a force of 125 men at Gettysburg, moved to Western Virginia, and then took part in operations in East Tennessee. The 36th was with McCausland at Chambersburg, served with Early in the Shenandoah Valley, and was active around Appomattox. After cutting through the lines at Appomattox, it disbanded. Major James W. Sweeney was in command.

Wow so Greenville wasn't captured until Dec of 63, and Gettysburg was in July, so is it a stretch to say that he was there, and survived?

Here is a roster I found for company A

Edward Baker of Lancaster County 1722

Just recently found out that Edward Baker is my 6th great grandfather...I had assumed it was Andrew Baker(that was married to Mary Boiling)  that's why it is so important to do your own research, when I first started genealogy I blindly just added what other people had to my tree, DNA testing has put my baker line right with Edward. I do believe that Edward Baker somehow connects with Robert Baker, the gun maker, from Lancaster County, and then later Amelia County,Va. I am hoping by writing all this out, I either connect the dots or maybe someone will read this and they connect the dots..or at least find a new cousin.

Edward Baker was born around 1722 in Lancaster co, PA his father was also named Edward and his mother could of possibly been Dorthy but at this time I have no other information. These records have been pieced together through a family bible (not mine) and quaker records.

*****************************************************************************************************************************
About Edward Sr.
Came to America about 1715 settling first in Chester County PA then to Lancaster County.
Records state he is the son of William of Hampshire. A year after their arrival Edwards nephew (by deceased brother Richard) went to Philadelphia. Edward and family moved to Pridesville area of Amelia County in 1736

William was born 1687 Basingstoke, Hampshire, England

His children

1. William
2. Edward( died young)
3 and 4 twin daughters born in England
5. Joseph (sickly never married lived with edward2)
6 and 7 more twin daughters
8. Edward

Can be traced back several more generations, but for now I will leave it as is
*****************************************************************************************************************************

Back to the topic Edward of 1722

(Let me just start by saying Edward and his family probably worried the Quakers immensely , several got disowned, they had slaves, married cousins..etc...a bunch of heathens..some traits sure do pass down generation after generation haha)

Edward and his brother Joseph moved from Amelia County, VA to the northwestern part of Pittsylvania county(became henry county in 1776 and then Franklin County in 1785)
Soon after came cousins Edward, Robert, William, and Richard Baker to other parts of Pittsylvania County.
These cousins were not Quakers
These appear to be Richards children(his fathers brother) that went to Philadelphia first. (Another note of interest is Robert the gun makers wife was from Philadelphia.

Edward married Elizabeth Lovell in 1742
Elizabeth was daughter of William Lovell
William was born 1699 in Modbury, Devonshire, England came to Virginia around 1720 with a group of Quakers settling in Isle of Wight county, he died in 1737
William also had a son William, which gave Edward and his sister two slaves as a wedding gift, causing a rift because of their religion, yet they kept them.

Edward was a planter and a harness maker.

Edward and Elizabeth had the following children

1. Elizabeth b. 1744
2. Sarah b. 1747
3. Edward b. 1749
4. Richard b. 1750
5. William b. 1755
6. Robert b. 1756
7. James b. 1761
8. Mary b. 1762
9. John b. 1765

Children William and John drowned on a ferry in 1771. I should add here in addition to Edward working with leather and crops he also operated a ferry in Upper Blackwater present day Franklin co VA(which is where him and Elizabeth settled after marriage)

I need to spend some time digging into all his children's lives, but here is what I have.

Elizabeth married James Arthbuckle and settled in Russell and Lee County VA

Sarah married her first cousin Caleb Baker and was disowned from the Quakers. When Caleb died she married his widow brother Samuel and moved to Yadkin County, NC. She had children by both brothers( so her children were sibilings and first cousins, and second cousins)
What I have been able to find so far is there were brothers Samuel and Caleb born to an Abraham Baker, Abraham was the son of Caleb Baker(gun maker) and grandson of Robert Baker(gun maker)
A first cousin shares grandparents, so that doesn't work out, maybe they weren't first cousins, maybe second or third even..I don't know how much other people have added on while transcribing records. As of yet i haven't found out anything else about these brothers. More about the gun makers below.

Edward married Maleatha Crowell moved to Russell County VA and then back to Franklin County VA

Richard married Mary Mullins and moved to Henry county, VA (this is my line)
Richard was disciplined and married contrary to discipline (mcd) I would like to know why the Quakers didn't want this marriage to take place

Robert moved to Washington county TN

James married Jessy Harmon and moved to Lee County VA later to Claiborne county TN

Mary married Francis Peterson of Lee County, they moved to South Carolina.

In 1786/87 Edward and Elizabeth, several grown children and their family, and some cousins moved to western Russell Co VA where they attempt to establish a station on Powell River. Edward dies there. Indians force them to flee in 1788 back to Franklin County.

*****************************************************************************************************************************
Some info on the gun maker Bakers...their travel patterns are similar..
Please note there was some conflicting information, I have tried to bare bone it to what I think is essential.

Robert Baker settled in Conestaga Township, Chester Co PA-became Lancaster Co in 1729
On august 15 1719 went to Lancaster court and asked permission to erect a gun boring plant, him and his son caleb set up gun shop, Robert dies in 1728, his son Caleb continues to operate it until the family moved to Amelia County, VA

Something else I found very interesting is while someone was researching who the first gun maker was of Lancaster county another name came up. Martin Mylin/Meylin is it that far of a strech that some could of branched out to the name Mullin/s..something else worth researching! He was found on a 1716 Lancaster tax list. Could this possibly be the family that my Mary Mullins comes from! Mylins were Mennonites which could could explain why my Richard was disciplined not to mary her...hmmmmm

Another theory I have on Richards wife Mary Mullins is she is sister of Susannah Mullins. Susannah Mullins married Edward Baker4 he was son of edward grandson of the 1722 edward. Supposedly Mary was born in 1770 although I don't know where I got those facts at. Susannah was the daughter of William Mullins and Nancy Jane Stanley..It would make sense as they usually intermarried.

In case anyone in interested here is my lineage to edward

Me
My mom
James Baker-my grandma(still living)
Buck Baker-Rebecca Stephens
William Baker-Ella Hubbard
Cornelius Baker-Socia Hammonds
Richard Baker-Abigal Beverly
Richard Baker-Mary Mullins

Although I am not done with this, I will publish and add to it as I find information, after all genealogy is never done.

I believe this line is verified down to Sophia Perry-I just have to provide documentation for the rest of it to get into the Mayflower Society..which I think is incredible and I plan on doing so. Since I started doing genealogy research I NEEDED that mayflower line, and I would get so close only to find it it wasn't true, or my ancestors would be on the Speedwell and not continue on the Mayflower..so finally finding one made this geek girl geek even harder.

Famous cousin Ralph Waldo Emerson

Ralph Waldo Emerson is my 4th cousin 6x removed

The Mysterious Mary Wright

My 2x great grandmother makes me feel like a genealogy failure. I am writing this in hopes that someone researching her will contact me, or someone that likes a challenge will take this on out of pure kindness.

I will start with the things that I know are a fact.

Born around 1877 according to the 1910 and 1920 census
Married Anderson Prater in 1902ish according to 1910 census

1910 census
Dotson branch, precinct 8, floyd county, ky
Anderson age 50 marriage #2
Mary age 33 marriage #1 (3 children all living)
Cidney age 32 (Mary's step daughter)
John age 21 (Mary's step son)
Bettie age 6
Milton age 4
Calley age 6 months(my great grandfather)

March 22 1911 Elbert Prater born

April 22 1913
Mary marries Josh Poe

Anderson prater died in a mining accident sometime between 1910 census and 1913 I have no been able to find death certificate for him.

1920 census
Josh poe age 67
Mary age 43

That's the end of the paper trail I can find. I do know that the mary that married josh poe is her, because it was also wrote in my grandmas bible.

Notice 1920 census clara poe her daughter does not live with her, nor any of her other children!

I have found all her children living in different households. Calley and Elbert living with Anderson's sister, and all the other children are scattered living in seperate households.

Now the real mystery begins, I have her parents as noah wright and julia stanley
I had someone message me saying that mary had 2 children unwed father unknown before she married Anderson, her parents ended up raising them, their names were Edith and Brady wright. Her grandmother was Edith , and never spoke of her mother, just that she remembered her leaving when she was young(apparently to marry Anderson) never saw her again...

So is it the same mary wright??? Sure does have a pattern of leaving her children. My great grandpa cal told my grandma that he had Cherokee in him(which doesn't mean much) but I found some info on the children of noah wright and julia stanley, one was listed as Cherokee on a webpage. I have also seen some pictures of that family, and they resemble my grandmas family.which again doesn't mean much..

I have yet to find a death certificate for mary wright prater poe..nor could I find anything else on clara.

Maybe someone can help.
